Here we are writing an article to make aware our readers about transformer oil types and applications.Basically, transformer oil is also known as insulating oil is that oil which remains stable at high temperature. It has especially high electrical insulating properties and used in the oil filled transformer. It is liquid insulation in electrical power transformer and consumes heat generated by transformers.Transformer oil has a various function, the most essential of these are highly insulating and cooling properties.
Types of transformer oil are:
Naphthenic based transformer oil:
Naphthenic based transformer oil is basically wax-free and has a good flowing feature under low temperature. One of the best feature of naphthenic oil it also good heat distribution oil. Naphthenic base oil also provides better low-temperature performance, which makes them ideal for formulating hydraulic fluids and automatic transmission fluids.
Paraffinic based transformer oil:
Paraffinic based transformer oils are obtained by solvent separation techniques from paraffinic crude oil, which gives a good yield of high viscosity index stocks containing a lot of wax. This oil has good thermal and oxidation durability and good high-temperature viscosity feature.
Silicone based transformer oil:
Silicone based transformer oil was generally popularized in the middle of 70’s and has become broadly accepted for transformer where the location or environment presents a risk that appeals a fire safety alternative to transformer oil.
Bio based transformer oil:
Bio- based is a type of transformer oil which is obtained from vegetable oil feed stock. Bio-based oil does not include petroleum hydrocarbons, silicons, or halogens, it quickly biodegrades in case there is a leak or spill, and is non-toxic in nature. Also, bio-based transformer oils have far higher resistance to fire than mineral oil.
Applications of transformer oil
Distribution transformers are those which are installed in the location of the city in order to provide utilization voltage at the consumer terminals. The distribution transformer may have one primary and one divided secondary, or two or more secondaries. The distribution transformer operates at light load during majorly during part of the day.
Power transformers are those transformers which are installed at finishing or receiving an end of long high voltage transmission lines are the power transformers. These transformers are used in transmission network of higher voltages for the step-up and step-down application. A power transformer generally has one primary and one secondary, and one input and output. Power transformers commonly operate at full load.
